Step 1: Brainstorming
A brainstorm is writing all your thoughts, feelings and info of your topic. Think about what your essay is about and what you will say about it. Write down every single word that can give you an idea or inspiration. These words should not be irrelevant and should be easily related to your topic. For example if your topic is animal shelters you can't say "I have a pet cat" because this does not relate to animal shelters. What would be a better sentence is "I have a pet cat from the animal shelter" because this relates better.
Your topic sentence is your main idea which states your feelings of the topic or what it is. It is an introduction to your essay which will guide your audience and hook them. You will want to give your topic, main idea, everything you will include in the essay and your feelings. A bad topic sentence would be "I love the smell of animals in the animal shelter" because they do say something about animal shelters but it doesn't grab your audience right into the essay and make them eager to read. Also, it does relate to animal shelters but this relation isn't a perfect start. It shouldn't be about you unless you are supposed to give your opinion.
Step 3: Outline your ideas
Remember your topic and main idea because now you need to support your topic sentence. This is why you shouldn't have used a topic sentence like my bad ones. in this part you will put your facts, reasons and strong opinions. Now is the time to do research. These sentences that will come after should be informative and easy to support. If you were doing an essay on animal shelters you would need an opinion of animal shelters. Do you think they are good or bad? Why do you think that? You will need plenty of reasons and all your ideas in your brainstorm. What animals are kept in animal shelters? Give some facts and information that will blow your audience's minds! Keep them in jot notes for now.
Use the jot notes and start writing your essay. Use words that will hook your audience and make them ready for more. Be very detailed and describe everything descriptively. Use specific information to make your point and give your opinion. Don't bead around the bush and get to the point fast or else you will lose your audience. You also want to make your writing fluent and easy to follow so use transitions like "First", "Next" and "Lastly". This will help your audience.
Step 5: Finish your Essay
It is now time to wrap up your essay. You will need a conclusion or closing sentence that gives your topic sentence in different words. Restate your main idea and leave it at that. Here is a bad conclusion: "That is all I have to say about animal shelters" or say exactly what your topic sentence says. A good conclusion would be: "As I said before, an animal shelter is the perfect place to buy your pet for all my strong reasons I gave you. If you are ready to buy a pet, forget the pet store and go to your local animal shelter" or "When you buy a pet, don't try to find one in an animal shelter. Go to your local breeder or pet store instead. That's the smart way to buy a pet!".

Excellent hint, Sarah. I think my daughter Tiffany just needed this, thanks
